The house is a traditional stone-built smallholder's house on a garden plot
with a large barn.
The first occupants would have owned fields out in the marsh (Marais Poitevin)
which they would have accessed by boat, and they would have transported their
autumn harvest back to the mooring and carried it up the steep alleyway
(venelle) to be stored for the winter in the barn (balai)
It would probably have been mostly beans! These grow superbly in the sunny,
well irrigated marsh fields and are easy to store.
